Adding impetous to Ian Simpson's plans for a new luxury hotel in Glasgow is the announcement by leading brand Jumeirah the development will be their first outside of London.
Standing in the centre of Glasgow on Argyle Street, it will have 26 floors and be 92.5 metres high making it the tallest building in Glasgow, a margin that will increase as the city's existing tallest buildings, sixties commieblocks, are gradually demolished.
Within the main section of the scheme will be 158 five star plus hotel rooms, a banqueting suite for 630 people, a new spa and gym, a cocktail bar on the highest floor, and 137 car parking spaces on two basement floors. Next door a shorter block that continues the design of the main tower will contain 68 serviced apartments managed by Jumeirah.
The building will be particularly noteworthy in the day time for its cladding which features a tonal range of reds and yellows and at night a distinctive crown that will be lit up creating a very visible landmark on the Glasgow skyline. Pedestrians will be greeted with the novel view of a glass enclosure around the base of the tower making a very visible interior space at ground level and opening up the foot of the building to passersby.
A compulsory purchase order has been issued for the developers to reclaim the part of the site they don't own and financing is in place too meaning the scheme progress in the very near future.
Construction of the building is expected to begin at some point in 2009 in time for a 2011 opening making it a rapid contrast to the will-it-wont-it Elphinstone Place that was eventually shelved earlier this year thanks to lack of finance and the bankruptcy of a new partner in the venture who had supposedly stepped in to make it all happen.
This won't be the last building of this type for Glasgow. Jumeriah have a reputation for offering a very high end and exclusive service which will mark the building as the first of a generation of new hotels that Glasgow could see arrive if there is desire from others for competition within the sector.
